Everyone would be glad if he could find a way to gain immunity from disease and the many other troubles which afflict mankind. Medical doctors, believing that a human being is governed by a material body with a complex organization liable to attack by disease germs, try to confer immunity by certain material methods.
Christian Science teaches that an individual's health is governed by his thought and is not at the mercy of matter. The seeming origins of disease are mental, not material. Radical and universally effective protection against disease must therefore be looked for and practiced in thought; and the proper protective methods of thought should be made habitual and regularly exercised.
Diseases begin in thought, either in the individual's private consciousness or in the general thought of humanity which he is liable to accept. Definite mental work to destroy suggestions of disease in their initial stages is an important part of the armory of a Christian Scientist. It is easier to destroy the beliefs of disease in their earliest stages of mental suggestion than to wait until they have taken sufficient root in consciousness to become apparent as so-called physical disease.
