A neighbor who was a student of Christian Science came to see me at one time and found me in great need. She left a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel with me and said it would help me if I would read it. I did not remember much of anything I read at the time because I was suffering from a deep sense of despondency and was on the verge of a nervous collapse. In a few days I called her and asked where I could get another Sentinel. She then advised me to seek the help of a Christian Science practitioner, who would help me through prayer.
At this time our five children were very young, and because of financial reverses I was not able to continue with adequate help to maintain a large home and to care for the family. This was presenting problems I could not cope with. Through the help of a practitioner who lived near us I was able to see that the obstructions to my peace and harmony were the burdens of self-pity, resentment, and a false sense of values.
One day in near desperation I called the practitioner and asked him if he would come to our home, since one of the children was feverish and listless. He said he would come, and by the kind way he spoke I felt he could help me. I had been reading the testimonies printed in the Sentinels and was greatly impressed by the various healings. The practitioner read many passages from the King James Version of the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, that convinced me Christian Science heals today by the same method that Jesus used in all his healing work. I saw my child completely healed that very afternoon.
