When we learn to apply Christian Science, difficult experiences naturally turn into blessings, and our gratitude for proofs of God's care becomes greater than we can express in words.
While en route to a resort last year we had to travel over some roads made very rough by a recent flash flood in that area. Our trailer was severely shaken. On arriving at our destination my family went on an errand. While I was preparing the evening meal, it became so dark that I lit the gas lamp. It burned for a few seconds; then a torch of fire burst out on the side of the pipe. The flames flashed out of the windows, the door, and the ceiling vent. They were not more than three inches from the top of my head.
As I tried to turn off the valve, the heat became unbearable. I had always had a great fear of being burned, and now Job's words came to me with startling force (3:25), "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me."
