LISTENING FOR DIVINE DIRECTION

From the June 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

OFTEN in our experience difficult decisions have to be made in charting our next moves. A wrong decision, sometimes even a minor one, may seriously affect the harmony and happiness of our lives. It is well, then, to be listening continually in prayerful humility for divine direction, that we may make decisions in which the human will has no part.

The definition of "ears" in the Glossary of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy states that they are "not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding" (p. 585). In order, then, to give close attention as we listen, we must eliminate distracting and fearful thoughts, which have no place in spiritual understanding. In this way we can give special consideration to the receiving of the divine message for which we are listening and which will determine our next move.

Fear and worry are two mental elements that obstruct clear listening. In Christian Science we learn that the real man is made in the image and likeness of God, and as God's reflection, he expresses the qualities of Love and Mind, which are synonyms for God. One who reflects Love cannot fear, and one who reflects divine Mind cannot worry. Spiritual qualities are omnipresent and ever available in time of need. When we express love and intelligence in our daily living, fear and worry are eliminated, and the divine voice can be heard distinctly.
