Christian Science was introduced to my family at a time of great need. My mother had been deserted by my father, and she was ill from the fear and anxiety occasioned by the sudden responsibility of supporting and rearing four children under ten years of age.
Christian Science healed her fears, and through its help she became the first woman to win an elective office in the county— that of township tax collector. I briefly attended a Christian Science Sunday School. After this, the truths learned in Science remained dormant for several years.
I, the eldest, was a frail child, and from the time I was born doctors had told Mother that she would not be able to rear me. At the age of thirteen, I had scarlet fever, suffered a setback, and developed rheumatism. Later, prolonged hemorrhages during adolescence were pronounced incurable by our family physician.
