During the depression in 1931 I was out of work and had repeated sickness in the family. After two or three months I remarked to a business friend who let me use his office when necessary that I had done all I could to find employment and also a cure for my daughter. He replied: "No, you have not. You should take up Christian Science."
No religion had been able to answer my question, "Who is God?" not even the one I followed as a boy in England or others I investigated after coming to the United States. How could I pray to a God I didn't know? Now, when my friend recommended Christian Science, I immediately bought a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and commenced reading it.
Shortly after, my wife, our two children, and I went to Cleveland to stay with relatives during the summer. Every week my children and I visited a practitioner in that city to find out more about Christian Science. During our second visit to her office a rash appeared on my daughter's leg. The rash had been a repeated problem for a long time and usually lasted about two weeks before disappearing. The practitioner asked my son and me to leave the room. When we entered it again about ten minutes later, I found my daughter healed of the rash. It was our first proof of healing in Christian Science! That was the last time the rash appeared.
