Mrs. Eddy states on page 548 of Science and Health, "Earth has little light or joy for mortals before Life is spiritually learned." There was "little light or joy" in my experience all through my younger years until I began to learn through the teachings of Christian Science what God is and what man's relation to Him is.
I remember that when I was a child I would ask my father, a religious man, many questions about why there is sickness and sadness and heartache, and he would always say, "Sometime, somehow, we will understand." We had many talks about what we thought heaven might be like.
My father became very ill, and I lost him. My mother also passed on, and I at the age of nine years was left without parents. I was then placed in an orphanage. There I asked for a Bible and spent much of my time studying the teachings of Jesus and asking God to heal my broken heart.
