OVERCOMING TENSION AND HURRY

From the February 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRIST JESUS said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Christian Science shows mankind how to accept this promise wholeheartedly, how to replace tension and hurry with the abundant life. Many turn to drugs and to stimulants for freedom. But this is a false turning. Freedom from these mental states lies in a quite different direction.

In one short sentence in "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs. Eddy indicates this. She says, "Be sure that God directs your way; then, hasten to follow under every circumstance" (p.117). When God is directing the way, there comes into daily affairs a sense of the allness of good, a certainty of Love's direction, a knowledge that each idea of Mind remains in its right place, functioning in harmony. Good is a present accomplishment. The abundant life which Jesus came to reveal is indeed at hand.

Wherever we go under God's direction, we find quiet resting places instead of tension. When we wait for God, we are not hurled from one task to another, from one place to another on waves of mortal mind. To glimpse the divine instead of fuming over material sense testimony blesses and purifies us. Consciousness of God's directing opens the way to accomplishment and enables one to reach his destination easily, safely, and on time.
