"Our gratitude is riches" (Hymn No. 249), Christian Science Hymnal, and certainly I am rich in gratitude for Christian Science and for Mrs. Eddy, who gave us this Science. I am grateful too for class instruction and the spiritual unfoldment it has given me.
My healing of chronic constipation some eleven years ago was perhaps the first major physical healing for me in Christian Science. The time came when I took my stand in Science. I used in my prayerful work this statement from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 125): "Neither organic inaction nor overaction is beyond God's control; and man will be found normal and natural to changed mortal thought, and therefore more harmonious in his manifestations than he was in the prior states which human belief created and sanctioned."
I had to see that I could be healed of this organic inaction by depending on God alone. Man is harmonious as the expression of omniactive Life, Mind, and Principle. What I seemed to be seeing in my experience was only human belief, created by mortal mind and sanctioned by mortal mind. I had dominion over this mortal mind suggestion of inaction because omniactive Life gave me dominion. After ten days of prayerful work and complete reliance on Christian Science, the need was met, and the healing is one for which I shall always be grateful.
Shortly after this healing, when my husband and I were still new students of Science, our daughter was experiencing a middle ear infection. The fact that I knew the anatomy of the ear and had been associated with teaching deaf children gripped my thinking with fear. There were doctors on the staff of the school, and my husband and I took the child to one of them, who in turn made arrangements at the hospital for an operation.
Then my husband and I realized what we had done. As Christian Scientists, how could we subject this precious child to such a thing! We turned wholeheartedly to Science and asked a practitioner to give her treatment. Within a few days of the beginning of the treatment, the hearing returned. The healing had taken place without any surgical means.
In our business we have also seen how God takes us all the way. My husband and I own a small manufacturing plant (manufacturing a seasonal item) . There is a constant need to overcome suggestions of lack. But I can see that if God's hands are full, how can man's be empty? Our every need has been met over the last eleven years through help in Christian Science.
At a time during the peak sales season, one machine was completely out of adjustment for two weeks. Consultants were called in, but the machine would not go back into adjustment. After we had done much prayerful work, a character defect was uncovered: resentment over the former owners who sold us this machinery had to be wiped out. When this error was uncovered and handled, perfect merchandise was suddenly turned out by the machine. We never did discover what part was out of adjustment in it, but our thinking had certainly been out of adjustment! When the thinking was corrected, the machine worked perfectly!
Christian Science can be applied to any phase of our experience. How grateful I am for this truth, ever ready to solve any human need!
