Christian Science came into my life upon my entering high school when my brother and I rejoined our mother after having been separated for some years due to a divorce in the family. Our mother had taken up the study of Christian Science, and as I look back, I am grateful that we accepted so naturally and easily this new way of thinking and acting.
My first real test of the truths of Christian Science came when I suffered severe lye burns. This was my first opportunity to choose between spiritual means of healing and medical treatment, both of which were offered. I chose the former, and with the faithful help of an earnest student of Christian Science, I was healed—not immediately, but within two weeks, during which time reliance on divine Love brought me assurance and confidence. These qualities of thought helped me stand in the face of the opinion expressed by friends that medical attention should be given. During some trying hours when the pain was intense and I was endeavoring to cling to the realization that there is no sensation in matter, a friend helped me realize that to glorify God was the motive with which to pray rather than to get rid of something offensive.
At a time when I was contemplating marriage, through the desire to do the thing that would bless all concerned, I was guided out of what would have been an unsatisfactory relationship into marriage with one who had been reared in a home where the teachings of Christian Science were valued. I am deeply appreciative of the prayerful support received at this time.
