Church Progress—My Responsibility!

From the October 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What is my responsibility as a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist? What are my duties, my privileges, my obligations? The important word to consider in these questions is the seemingly insignificant one, "my."

In examining our thoughts about church membership and church progress, we may find we have been prone to believe that problems and lack of progress are due to shortcomings on the part of some of the other church members. We sincerely believe that we are doing our part quite well, but we can't help being concerned about some of the others, and we are tempted to feel disturbed. After all, we love our church, and whether it grows and prospers is very much our concern.

In the Bible we read that on one occasion Peter saw the beloved disciple, John, following Jesus, and he said, perhaps with a hint of jealousy and self-righteousness, "Lord, and what shall this man do?"John 21:21; Jesus' reply to Peter can be our guideline in all matters of church business, "What is that to thee? follow thou me."
