"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). I can testify to the truth of that statement by Christ Jesus.
One sleepless night, about twenty years ago, I found myself in a state of mental depression and fear. This was the culmination of years of believing in a lack of ability, of intelligence, and of security. This state of thinking also caused chronic insomnia. My reliance on God's guidance and protection had ceased a dozen years previously when my attendance at a Christian Science Sunday School was discontinued. I now found myself praying aloud to God for help. Getting out of bed, I located a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel. This literature was in our home as a result of a healing of my mother's which involved a family problem.
As I searched this periodical frantically for some helpful thought, my mother came in and offered to read aloud from the Bible and from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I clung to the words of the ninety-first Psalm as she read it over and over. "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty" (verse 1). The fear slowly subsided, and a peaceful sleep came.
