Defense Against Evil Suggestion

From the June 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy we find the following By-Law: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged,—and justified or condemned." Man., Art. VIII, Sect. 6;

All carnal mind beliefs are comprised in aggressive mental suggestion. The term covers the whole category of mortal falsities claiming to control the minds of men. Without being aware of its falsities, mankind often come under the influence of evil suggestion, thinking that evil thoughts are their own. Christian Science clearly distinguishes between thoughts emanating from divine Mind and offshoots of the carnal mind.

The alert student never ruminates on evil suggestions nor permits them to multiply. He knows they are not his thoughts. In the Bible we have this passage: "I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Jer. 29:11; The true thoughts that emanate from God, divine Mind, are the only thoughts one can really have. When one understands this fact, suggestions have nothing to feed upon; therefore their destruction is inevitable.
