For many years the teachings of Christian Science have brought me great happiness and a fuller understanding of my relationship to God. My introduction to Science came through a neighbor who I could see had something that enriched her life.
When our daughter was almost two years old, her eyes began to function improperly. As a young mother, I was frightened by this alarming picture. My husband and I turned to medical aid for help. Three eminent physicians were consulted, and all agreed that an operation would have to be performed. The prediction was that the child might become blind in one eye. It was also said that the outcome of the operation was uncertain. The case was diagnosed as a form of squint. At first we tried exercises, and glasses were prescribed.
At this point I remembered that my neighbor attended a church that practiced spiritual healing. She explained that she was a Christian Scientist, and I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting with her. The first testifier told of a healing of crossed eyes. I could scarcely believe what I heard, although instinctively I felt that through God's direction my help was at hand. Immediately I purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and began the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. Upon request a Christian Science practitioner began to give our daughter treatment; the glasses were laid aside and the exercises were discontinued.
