Everything of benefit and blessing to mankind has come through the vision, purpose, and untiring work of individuals. And whether they have been reformers or pioneers, they have had such outstanding qualities of character as independence, integrity, single-mindedness, persistence, unselfed love, and great courage in the face of opposition and persecution. How greatly these qualities are needed today if we are to come within measure of the realization of our true individuality, our spiritual selfhood!
In these challenging and turbulent times the utmost demand is made upon each sincere student of Christian Science to rise at once to the zenith of his present spiritual understanding and to demonstrate increasingly the divine power, wholeness, and perfection of his real individuality as the son of God. The wonderful progress of Christian Science since its discovery by Mrs. Eddy more than a hundred years ago is due in part to individual growth and demonstration.
Christian Science teaches that all substance is Spirit and that, man is God's idea, spiritual and perfect, inseparable from his creator. Thus it was that our Master, Christ Jesus, understood real individuality. He knew God to be the only origin and source of his being. He constantly affirmed his at-one-ment with God. He turned thought from his human personality and claimed his true individuality in Spirit. He said he could do nothing of himself but was taught by his Father; and he triumphantly overcame the most subtle, overwhelming temptations and the most grievous trials known to men. Laying down all human sense of self he said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."John 12:32; And the multitudes flocked to him to be healed and redeemed. After his resurrection he came to his disciples and said, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." Matt. 28:18;
