Music in Our Church Services

From the April 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In thinking of the music in our church services, whether in relation to the work of the organist and the soloist or to the singing of hymns, we would do well to consider what Mrs. Eddy says about music. In one passage she states: "Music is the rhythm of head and heart. Mortal mind is the harp of many strings, discoursing either discord or harmony according as the hand, which sweeps over it, is human or divine." Science and Health, p. 213;

If we accept the fact that holy, uplifted thought heals and makes one free through the understanding of God, Truth, Love, and of man's relationship to Him as His perfect reflection, then we can recognize that such thought, expressed through music, uplifts and brings healing in the Christian Science church service. Therefore quiet, individual metaphysical preparation is essential. Our outward expression will depict whether the head and heart are governed merely by a human sense of things or by love and divine inspiration.

The chief cornerstone of the teachings of Christ Jesus was love. When one of the scribes asked him, "Which is the first commandment of all?" Jesus answered: "The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."Mark 12:28 31;
