Winning and Wearing the Crown

From the April 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During his glorious interval of revelation on the Isle of Patmos, John was told to write what he heard and saw for the enlightenment of the churches. This divine revelation of Truth has come down to us through the centuries in all its strength and power. Those who perceive the spiritual impetus of its message are inevitably aroused to greater achievement and an awakening to man's potential as the heir of God.

One of the many inspiring messages imparted through John to the churches by the spirit of Truth was this: "Hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown." Rev. 3:11; This admonition is applicable to an individual as well as to a church.

No symbol more clearly denotes power and dominion than does the crown. The word as it appears in the Old Testament refers to a human adornment, an indication of nobility and authority. In the New Testament the concept of the crown assumes an increasingly spiritual aspect as a perfect state of being to be secured through travail and through temptation overcome. The final meaning is a purely spiritual one and is clearly revealed through the inspired teachings of Christian Science.
