The power of Truth, applied through Christian Science, was demonstrated in negotiations for a new labor contract. The committee representing the factory workers and a committee representing management met sixty days before the contract expired. When the labor demands were presented, they were so far beyond fairness that it was thought they were presented only for bargaining purposes. The company decided to present every concession possible from the start in the expectation of obtaining a quick settlement. The gap between the two committees was great.
As president of the company, I decided to call for the help of a Christian Science practitioner. I had utmost confidence that regardless of what the evidence seemed to indicate, the proper knowledge of God as revealed in Christian Science could solve any problem, whatever its apparent complications. The following statement from Isaiah emphasized this (55:11): "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."
The company is relatively small in a very competitive national industry and could neither afford a work stoppage and the resulting loss of customers nor prohibitive economic demands. Many meetings were held in an attempt to negotiate a settlement, but the majority of the committee representing the employees was unyielding in its demands. Finally the president of the union resigned in protest against the exorbitant demands of his own committee. However, the attitude of the majority of the committee continued without change.
