True Liberty

From the June 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The desire for liberty is inherent in all individuals and races. When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty," II Cor. 3:17; he definitely identified God, Spirit, as the origin of liberty. In Christian Science, God is further revealed as divine Principle. Mrs. Eddy writes: "In the spiritual Genesis of creation, all law was vested in the Lawgiver, who was a law to Himself. In divine Science, God is One and All; and, governing Himself, He governs the universe." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 258; And in the same paragraph she adds, "On this infinite Principle of freedom, God named Himself, I am."

Mistaking the origin and nature of liberty, mankind have believed political action to be the sole means of its attainment. This has fostered the substitution of political expediency for Principle, which has often resulted in reckless experimentation and a conscienceless grasp of power.

Caught in the mesmerism of popular trends, individuals and nations have denigrated liberty and interpreted it in terms of license. Vagrant mortal whims are widely accepted as the governing law of one's conduct. Midst the confusion of lawlessness, immorality, and juvenile delinquency mankind look everywhere for the answer to their self-imposed woes.
