One has often heard the statement, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." This most certainly applied in my case, for I was at the point of despair over thirty years ago, having been bereft of all earthly possessions through an extended period of unemployment. I was in such desperate need that I had come to a point of offering for sale my very last worldly possession. I had received word from a likely purchaser to produce it for inspection. As I had no money, I was forced to walk a distance of some three miles from one suburb to another. The article was not acceptable, but during an outpouring of hard luck the people were so touched and concerned for me that their sympathy led them to ask me if I had "tried Christian Science." They assured me I could find help from its study.
The outcome of much further discussion was an invitation to take an evening meal with them on a Wednesday evening, to be followed by a visit to a Christian Science branch church testimony meeting.
This proved to be my promise of salvation, for I was much impressed by what I heard at that meeting. I inwardly felt that here was the answer to my yearning for freedom from the doubts and fears of this life. I was offered and I accepted the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I became absorbed in reading it. I was much uplifted, and as I had no work but plenty of time on my hands, I spent many hours in the Christian Science Reading Room.
