I would like to express my gratitude for...

From the September 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I would like to express my gratitude for Christian Science, for its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, and for Christ Jesus, our great Way-shower. Christian Science has made my life more meaningful, more purposeful. I am far happier than I ever imagined I could be, a changed man, who is content, one with a completely different set of values and outlook on life.

My paternal grandparents, who were orthodox Jews, raised me. Despite all my exposure to this faith, I never could fully accept it. After the age of thirteen I stopped any pretension to follow any formal religion. However, friends knew I was constantly searching for something to explain the why of me. They led me to orthodox Christianity, but it did not fulfill my needs. I felt so alone, so unworthy. I felt that there was a God, most assuredly, but unfortunately He seemed to be a God for all the others, not for me.

All of my life I had been ill with minor ailments, such as sore throats, headaches, ulcers. Then I started to develop what was diagnosed at that time as a virus of the blood. Later it was called a rare form of arthritis. It was spreading very rapidly, and I was told to resign myself to spending the rest of my life as a cripple. By that time I was unable to tie my shoes, sign my name, drive a car. Along with this came a deep depression. I was filled with fear.
