Sometimes when I see the Manual of The Mother Church on my desk, I am reminded vividly of the only time I saw Mary Baker Eddy, its author. The connection does not arise from anything that was said at the time, but as the impact of that contact has developed in my thinking, so has my appreciation of the Manual. Mrs. Eddy advises, "Adhere to the teachings of the Bible, Science and Health, and our Manual, and you will obey the law and gospel."The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 251, 252; Our Leader, through her gracious and tender love, arouses in the student of Christian Science the desire to obey.
I was a little girl when my mother awakened me at six o'clock in the morning on that important occasion when Mrs. Eddy had invited her followers to come to Pleasant View, her home in Concord, New Hampshire, to hear her say a few words. It was dark, and I was sleepy.
"I don't want to go to see the lady," I said.
