Healing through prayer never leaves us where it found us. More important than the happy solution of a problem is the measure of spiritual regeneration we gain, which, indeed, is a necessary requisite for the successful working out of any problem.
One of the most memorable experiences in a lifetime of blessings through the application of Christian Science was the healing of a relatively small physical problem. Several years ago a growth appeared in the corner of one eye. There was no pain, no obstruction of the vision. And so I accepted it, without protest, as a part of my eye. When I realized that it was disturbing my husband, and that others were beginning to notice the growth, I attacked the problem the same way in which I previously had worked out another more serious but less obvious growth. There was no change in the condition. One day I realized that I was attempting to apply a proven remedy or formula to the situation instead of praying for fresh inspiration and increased understanding of my relationship to God.
For several weeks a certain Bible passage had often come to mind. Each time I had dismissed it, perhaps believing its message too simple. Then one day I looked up the verse: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" The command following was explicit: "Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye" (Luke 6:41, 42).
