I was about seven years old when my mother first became interested in Christian Science. She was quickly healed of a chronic internal disorder of many years' standing by reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was healed of acidosis, which had plagued me all my childhood, and also of whooping cough.
When I was twelve years old, I was attending a boarding school prior to taking an entrance examination for a school for the daughters of Christian Scientists. I was suddenly taken ill with what was eventually diagnosed as pneumonia and pleurisy, supposed to have resulted from tuberculosis. My mother was informed and at once called a Christian Science practitioner three hundred miles away, who gave me treatment.
In accordance with the laws of our country I received a medical examination. The physician first diagnosed scarlet fever and arranged for me to be admitted to an isolation hospital. A second opinion was that I had tuberculosis and should accordingly be moved to hospital for treatment. There was no bed available there, however, and my mother took on the job of nursing me at school because we had no home at the time. Three days later a close friend offered us accommodation in her home, and I was moved there.
