Behind the scenes: the healing work

From the October 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When someone devotes himself fully to the Christian Science healing practice, is he really doing something for the community? In the opinion of a liberal arts college in Hampton, Virginia, Yes. Hampton Institute has presented a Centennial Medallion Citation to one of its alumnae, a black Christian Science practitioner living in Ohio, for her "religious work" for the community as well as for her support of her alma mater.

"Your life exemplifies the true spirit of your alma mater by showing through example that we can make a contribution to our brother through our chosen way with service to God and our country," the citation reads. "Over a period of more than twoscore years, you have dedicated yourself to helping others. You have shown that there are no insurmountable barriers and that one can be victorious if willing to give unstintingly for a cause. Through your earnest and untiring effort in religious affairs, you have been one of the first of your race to be recognized for your work in this area.

"Involvement in community projects and affairs is important for all of us," it continues. "Your participation in helping others has included work behind the scenes; many times it has been unknown to the recipients. Your life of helpfulness, your religious manner of approaching a problem, and your kind words of wisdom stand as a beacon to all of your many friends and admirers." The citation was signed by the Chairman of Hampton's Trustees and by its President. A businessman goes into the practice.
