Healing the Child Through the Parent's Thought

From the October 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Children are great mimics. We often smile to see a young boy who walks like his father or a little girl who gestures just like her mother. Children naturally love their parents and have a great desire to be like them. But parents need to recognize that their ways of speaking and doing are much less influential than their ways of thinking, which set silent examples for the children. This knowledge is indispensable to healing children through Christian Science practice.

It is also important to reverse through prayer in Christian Science the basic material belief that children are conceived by material parents and are thus in slavery to hereditary influences. A physical sense of origin is the opposite of Truth. The false concept of origin is the basis of discord. In their true, spiritual identity, children are offspring of divine Principle, the Life that is Mind, the origin of all ideas. We are not offspring of one another. The Psalmist sings, "Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves."Ps. 100:3;

To understand that God is the Father-Mother and the only real influence over each child is a great release for the parent from a sense of responsibility and anxiety, and this realization results in healing. The human body is a reflection of human thought. When human belief is uplifted to coincide with the beautiful, harmonious, unerring, eternal, individual action of divine Mind, the human body—of parent or child—comes under the direct jurisdiction of Almighty God.
