HAGAR'S PRAYER

From the October 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Be with me now; the days grow dark, O Lord.
Fluting of birds falls faint upon the ear;
Stairways soar skyward, outlines blur. O speak,
Speak! For Thy voice alone is mine to hear.

Thou who art All-in-all, bring blessed light:
Life, Truth, and Love, irradiating day;
Minister gently to my need, be kind;
Uphold and strengthen me, I humbly pray.

For I have shed tears that burned as fire burns;
Wandered in wastes, lost to all living things;
Thirsted in vain for sweet salvation—then
Thy voice! And lo, the gush of newfound springs!

As in the past, so it shall ever be.
Why should I pray for good already mine?
The glory of Thy presence shines on me....
It is enough! I need no further sign.
