Facing the Illusion of Matter

From the October 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Individuals who practice Christian healing usually decide that they must penetrate more deeply beyond what is considered to be diseased matter. Often this thoughtful searching has led to a rather fundamental conclusion.

Let's think, from a fresh and logical standpoint, just what that conclusion might be. Stepping back in years, suppose we consider what happened to an individual who had a withered hand. One Sabbath day this individual was seen by a young man who was fulfilling an exceptional role. Today he might have described some of his work as "telling it like it is!" However, he once used these words regarding his mission in life: "That I should bear witness unto the truth."John 18:37; At any rate, during the meeting of these two men, while a crowd looked on, the diseased condition entirely disappeared and the hand became normal. (See Mark 3:1-5.)

Might there not be two approaches to viewing what happened here? Some of those looking on from the sidelines that day took one direction. They bypassed the spiritual lesson to be learned and dealt with something that seemed more important to them—their human rules, regulations, form, dogma. After all, the Sabbath was not the day to do this type of thing. In fact, it was contrary to their law. Others took another approach and thought deeply about the significance of this whole event.
