Angels and Nerves

From the February 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The spiritual facts of being, which exist in Mind, God, are counterfeited by the false beliefs of the carnal, or mortal, mind. One of these beliefs is that the functions and faculties of the body are controlled by nerves, and that disturbances in the nervous system result in diseases of various types.

Electrobiologists believe that electricity, generated chemically in the body, can overstimulate nerve centers through emotional reactions and thus cause disturbance or disease. This claim that nerves control the body is exposed by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health in the allegory of the trial of Mortal Man. She writes of Mortal Man's defense by his attorney, Christian Science: "Then Christian Science proved the witness, Nerve, to be a perjurer. Instead of being a ruler in the Province of Body, in which Mortal Man was reported to reside, Nerve was an insubordinate citizen, putting in false claims to office and bearing false witness against Man."Science and Health, p. 438;

Christian Scientists need to know how to handle the claims of nerves and electricity, for these cover a wide range of beliefs met in the healing practice of this Science. Mrs. Eddy says in this regard, "Knowing the claim of animal magnetism, that all evil combines in the belief of life, substance, and intelligence in matter, electricity, animal nature, and organic life, who will deny that these are the errors which Truth must and will annihilate?"pp. 450, 451;
