Occupation: Housewife

From the February 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Occupation: Housewife." How many times a woman describes her job with that word on some form! But perhaps she feels a little ashamed to go on record with what she may consider an unimportant and uninteresting career. She may even envy the glamorous-sounding jobs of others or feel overworked and underappreciated.

Of course, it is a truism that houses require housework. Whether this requirement is a bane or a blessing depends on the attitude of the housewife. What can be done to help a housewife face her daily round with enthusiasm and joy?

When we are using Christian Science to meet such a challenge, it is helpful to remember that human circumstances in themselves have no power to make us miserable; it is how we view them that makes all the difference. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us, "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul."Science and Health, p. 269; The housewife needs to resolve the things of housework into the thoughts, or ideas, they represent, to see that all her activities actually take place in Mind, not in matter. Mind's activities must of necessity be joyous, interesting, and useful—as harmonious as their divine source.
