From the February 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was married and had a family when I first heard of Christian Science from an old school friend. At that time I was experiencing frustration with life in general as a result of a sense of my own inadequacy, world injustices, and my failure to find satisfaction. For some years I spasmodically visited branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, in London, England, to hear testimonies of Christian Science healing. Gradually it dawned on me that all those people could not be wrong, but I was not quick to grasp this new understanding of God. Members of my family had never heard of Christian Science and opposed any association with it since it did not follow the orthodox pattern.

At the time, I was struggling with a small business that met with all sorts of difficulties, including those brought about by the economic problems in England, so we decided to emigrate to Canada. This move marked the turning point for me as far as Christian Science was concerned. I knew I was leaving behind all the old friends and conditions that claimed to afford some sort of protection, and that I had no option but to rely on God.

I was over the age at which employers were eager to employ me. I took the only available opening, which was door-to-door selling. This was in a very poor part of the city. It was from a house in this very part that I was introduced to another job within three weeks. I was led from one job to another until, in subsequent years, I was able to get back into my own business.
