Mankind is again in one of those periods of confusion and uncertainty that students of history are familiar with. Tribal and national conflicts, class and race prejudice, self-interest at the expense of others, immorality, and amorality are rampant. They are appearing in aspects so alarming as to challenge all men and women who seek to love God and their neighbor in order to understand and help solve the pressing problems of their fellowmen near and far.
However alien and incomprehensible a neighbor's dilemma often seems to us, we can hold to the eternal fact, demonstrable in Christian Science, that God, the one creative Principle, perfectly governs the universe of His creation, including man in His image and likeness. We are reassured by this declaration of Mrs. Eddy's: "The universe reflects God. There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God." Science and Health, pp. 502, 503;
Striving to understand our true identity and that of our fellowman, we will not yield to pessimism or fear of apocalyptic disaster in our efforts to be of service to our neighbor at home or abroad. Some of us may find solace and direction in remembering Paul's words to the troubled Corinthians: "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." II Cor. 1:3, 4;
