Resources for a Revolutionary Time

From the April 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

People say we are living in a revolution, and it is becoming obvious that we are. The violence and alienation of this time, as well as the often fumbling efforts for freedom and justice, make a strong demand on any thoughtful member of society to collect his resources to do what he can.

The student of Christian Science is particularly called upon to know his own resources because what he has to use and give is so much needed and so fitted to the time. Also, he can't depend much on the conventional sources for basic direction or support. To the degree that he is awake in Christian Science, he is citizen of the new world of spiritual values struggling to emerge, not of the old one that based its stability on matter. As pioneer he needs not only all the loving purpose but all the intelligent means he can muster.

Most of us would put high on our list of resources the spiritual conviction that enables us to think clearly in the midst of passion and confusion. In this revolutionary period one needs consciously to develop his inner certainty and peace. It takes a persistent checking of sense evidence against eternal facts, a continual turning to the divine source for refreshment in grace, to remain aware that God is the only Mind, that all intelligence flows from that Mind and is good, a manifestation of Love and Principle. How strengthening it is to know that we are not bits of flotsam on a tide of random, fearful, or destructive impulses! We are inviolably individual, spiritual—expressions of God's being—controlled by Him in intelligent, meaningful action. And the world we now live in is not out from under that control either, however it may appear. Divine Principle, Love, supplies the actual frame of reference for us and for all.
