When our daughter was almost two years old, we noticed she began to limp slightly. We started to do our prayerful metaphysical work, as we are taught in Christian Science, but over a period of weeks things got worse instead of better. This was discouraging, but I found myself saying each day, "Christian Science heals, and I know I can prove it." This eliminated all thought of doubt and possible failure. My husband and I had had the blessed privilege of class teaching prior to this time, so we were grateful to have powerful spiritual truths to work with.
There was much fear expressed by members of both families. We saw that this was their highest sense of love and concern for the child, though this gave us added prayerful work to do.
The little girl could not walk by this time. She was in pain when moved, was physically deformed in both legs and one arm, and things seemed to be getting worse. Hoping to ease the family pressure, my husband and I decided to have the child examined by a well-known bone specialist. We were told that she would never walk normally or without pain again. The doctor stated there was nothing that could be done and pronounced the case incurable. With that we were told of added side effects that would eventually occur, but that these side effects might be prevented if further tests were made and certain drugs tried. On the way home my husband and I realized that this was surely an opportunity to glorify God.
