How Do We Value Money and Things?

From the May 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A young woman said, "I gave up my ten-thousand-a-year job and my apartment and sold off all the furnishings. I thought that in giving up all I had I would be helping others. But now I'm not sure it has helped much.

"Now I live in a tiny rented room and have barely enough to live on. And I'm wondering where I go from here. However, I understand Mrs. Eddy said we have to sacrifice material things if we would gain spiritual understanding. Is this true?"

The young woman was referring to a statement in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: "A great sacrifice of material things must precede this advanced spiritual understanding."  Science and Health, p. 16
