Forwarding the Spiritual Birth

From the June 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The conscientious student of Christian Science qualifies himself for the highest and most important of all involvements today. He takes part in forwarding spiritual birth, or the appearing to human consciousness of man's original, sinless, and wholly spiritual entity as the eternal idea of God, infinite Spirit or Mind. He becomes spiritually prepared to aid in the removal of mental obstacles that would obstruct this birth, or unfoldment, of spiritual existence to individual and collective human thought.

Every mortal, material discord is but a mental obstacle externalized; it manifests some form of mental resistance to the birth, or coming to light, of man's purely spiritual nature as God's likeness or reflection. And every scientific healing of discord in Christian Science involves the removal of some mental obstacle to spiritual birth, to the progressive appearing of man's harmonious, immortal being as demonstrated by Christ Jesus.

A strong point in the teachings of Jesus was that spiritual birth, or regeneration, is requisite for healing. When Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came to him by night, Jesus told him that men must be born again in order to see the kingdom of God. When Nicodemus questioned Jesus as to whether a second material birth was possible, Jesus answered, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."John 3:5, 6; Men need to awake to the true sense of life in God—to be cleansed of fleshly beliefs and imbued with the pure thoughts of Spirit —in order to be healed of the ills of the flesh and experience the harmony of divine good on earth.
