The Word of God in the Scripture, whose spiritual meaning is revealed in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, is the true healer of all human ills.
A kind friend lent a copy of Science and Health to my father when he was in bed suffering from one of his attacks of recurring malarial fever. As he read, some inkling of the power and nature of God, Spirit, and of the spiritual nature of man in God's image illumined his consciousness with the realization that sickness had no ability to enslave him. He arose from his bed completely and permanently healed. Nor did he again need the glasses he had worn for many years.
After this he and my mother began to study Christian Science, and it was not long before I, then seven years old, was healed of tuberculosis. We later moved, and I was enrolled in the nearby Christian Science Sunday School. I was blessed by my parents' progress, although I seemed not to understand Science too well. I did realize that sickness was an error of belief, neither necessary nor able to restrict me. Yet because it had no real roots in me, the truth planted in my thinking remained dormant. And when I left home, I drifted away from Science.
