Defense Against Mental Malpractice

From the March 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At the end of the chapter on Christian Science Practice in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy gives this admonition: "Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake." Science and Health, p. 442; And in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, under the heading "Take Notice," she refers to this statement: "To Christian Scientists:—See Science and Health, page 442, line 30, and give daily attention thereto."My., p. 237;

Describing the conscientious teacher of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy says: "He feels morally obligated to open the eyes of his students that they may perceive the nature and methods of error of every sort, especially any subtle degree of evil, deceived and deceiving. All mental malpractice arises from ignorance or malice aforethought. It is the injurious action of one mortal mind controlling another from wrong motives, and it is practised either with a mistaken or a wicked purpose." Science and Health, p. 451;

Mrs. Eddy did not leave us helpless before the threats of mental malpractice. She provided us with the sure means for defense. She revealed the truth of God and man, and this truth the Psalmist refers to when he says: "His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day." Ps. 91:4, 5;
