"In this desperate and tragic hour in Northern Ireland many people find it hard to trace even a glimmer of hope in the prevailing gloom.
"Yet the one thing we must not do is give up hope. We must never accept the conclusion that there is no way out, no way of escape from the circle in which the province and people of Ulster appear to be gripped.
"This is a time when those men and women closest to the problem must look within their hearts and search for answers in the quietness of prayer."
