My first testimony appeared in The Christian Science Journal of April, 1943. I did not come into Christian Science for healing. I found a Sentinel in a cellar. When I read it, I was so uplifted I knew that this copy of the Sentinel was God's way of showing me this pure religion. I went into a Reading Room and obtained the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I thought the most wonderful book I had ever read. From the beginning the knowledge gained from the textbook enabled me to heal resentment very quickly. I learned to separate false character traits from person and to see God's child.
When my husband's uncle was of advanced years, he was healed of a tumor through Christian Science.
One day my husband showed me several threatening letters from firms pressing for payment. Between us we had just over three pounds. There was only about fifteen minutes before the post left. It was Sunday, and the subject of the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly that day was "Substance." I knew that we did not need to get anything, we already had the substance of Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love, so I said to my husband, "We are not selfish. We only want to pay our way and to reflect integrity in our dealings." He replied, "The people who owe us money can't and won't pay. How can we settle our debts?" I then insisted that he stop thinking like that and see God's work being done, see all as God's ideas, not the reverse. I was so confident of results from this right thinking that I asked him to send each creditor a check for five pounds and say that the rest would follow in a few days, but he refused, saying that the checks would be returned to drawer. I said, "Then I will," and I wrote across the notices the words "Herewith £5, the rest in a few days," and ran to the post office just in time to catch the post.
