As a medical doctor I first heard of Christian Science shortly before the outbreak of World War II, when I was called to a patient who later became my wife. She had some interest in Science. I later learned that Christian Science is based on the Bible words, "God is love" (I John 4:16). I also heard that this Father, God, always and in every place preserves, protects, and guides the man created by Him.
I safely survived without harm all the jumble of the war years and postwar years. In the difficult time following the war, I became more and more engrossed in this glorious religion's store of ideas through reading the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and attending Christian Science lectures and church services. I recognized the fully spiritual basis of this teaching in contrast to the material ritual and content of other religions I had known.
Through regular study of the Lesson Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly I was led to apply my knowledge of this healing Science in a practical way. I had had an operation for a cataract during the war. Afterward my right eye became increasingly dim, and in more recent years I had become totally blind in that eye. I relied entirely on God, and no doubt because my largely material outlook gradually changed to a spiritual concept of life, and because relatives and practicing members gave me Christianly scientific support, the blindness, and then the dimness, completely cleared up, so that today I can see everything clearly again.
