Morning Push-ups

From the July 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We hear much about physical fitness and, indeed, it is important. But what about starting the day with divinely mental push-ups, a spiritual upsurging of thought? Heartfelt prayer and praise, prior to a new day's activities, give expansion to our thinking. Their foundation and starting point is divine Principle, God, the sum total of true ideas. Thus undergirded, their mental action uplifts one's thought with tireless divine energy into what spiritual sense bestows on us—freedom from the restrictions of material sense.

In Christian Science, one enlists to serve God through this higher sense of freedom. And that service is better accomplished when one early in the day fulfills his duty to purify consciousness in accordance with Christ Jesus' injunction: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."Matt. 6:33;

"Seek ye first" says this verse of Scripture, not "when it is convenient" or "as soon as you can get to it after a few other things are completed." One line of a hymn declares, "Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee."Christian Science Hymnal, No. 117; It echoes a verse from Psalms: "My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up."Ps. 5:3;
