What Is Unselfed Love?

From the July 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Who at various times has not felt a deep urge to reach out and help a friend struggling to maintain his way in life? Many have become so forgetful of themselves in their desire to help others that they have found themselves lifted from their own worries and fears, and often even healed of a physical illness. This basic element in humankind, this urge to help and extend kindness to one's brother, is universal and inherent in human beings. Sometimes clouded by seeming influences of hatred and selfishness, it nevertheless lies within each human breast, ready to be released at any given moment to heal and bless.

What is this power, this great universal force? Whence its origin and what its potential? It is the great basic force of unselfed love—love that knows no limits, that is more than human goodness or kindly affection, that transcends all human feeling for its deeper meanings and healing power.

In Christian Science unselfed love is a divine quality. Its potential for physical and mental healing supersedes that of any material means. Unselfed love stems directly from God. It opens the door through which truth enters the human consciousness.
