That " 'man's extremity is God's opportunity' " (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 266) was certainly borne out in my experience. My mother was in and out of many sanatoriums throughout my childhood, and I had been warned by our family physician that I could fall victim to the disease. Our fears were realized when in my late twenties it became necessary for me to give up working and enter a sanatorium with a condition diagnosed as a far advanced case of tuberculosis. My future looked pretty bleak.
Some years before this a relative, who was a student of Christian Science, had left the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, in our home. Only after admission to the sanatorium did I read it. I felt that obtaining some knowledge of God might lift my sense of frustration. So I began the serious daily study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly.
I found to my great joy that Christian Science workers from nearby churches visited the wards weekly, and I asked to be included in their visits. I well remember the growing understanding that came to me, and the satisfaction I found in their patient and loving answers to my numerous and searching questions.
