"Food convenient for me"

From the December 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Is there a law of God applicable to the problem of overweight?

Christ Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32 Free from what? From every limiting belief in matter—from anything not good. Surely overweight is within the bounds of this description. It is not good to carry around day after day what is not needed and serves no useful purpose. It is natural to want to look well, to be able to find clothes easily, and to feel a normal sense of freedom of movement without the burden of excess weight.

Christian Science teaches us there is a law of God to meet every need ; and it is a spiritual law, not material. Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health,"Departing from Christian Science, some learners commend diet and hygiene." On the same page she continues: "The Scientist's demonstration rests on one Principle, and there must and can be no opposite rule." Science and Health, p. 457 Because Christian Science accepts God as the source and creator of all good and denies the existence of any other reality, it would be incompatible with its teachings to practice material methods of diet or weight control. Principle is God, and His rule explicitly provides for the perfect maintenance of His creation; this provision includes every aspect of man's health and well-being.
