When Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science, the modern world was introduced to a more dynamic meaning of Church than men had known for centuries. This is reflected in the spiritual concept of "Church" given in the Glossary of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy writes that Church is "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle." Then she continues, "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." Science and Health, p. 583
Through many years of consecrated effort Mrs. Eddy took the steps necessary to establish in the world this spiritual sense of Church and its practical, healing mission to humanity. She early discerned the unique position the institution of church was destined to occupy in the world, and realized that its visible manifestation would be the demonstration of individual Christian Scientists in its healing and regenerative work among men. Thus Mrs. Eddy's demonstration of Church is our continuing demonstration.
In order that the Church of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world may continue to fulfill this high mission, and thus uplift and heal humanity, there must be active, constant evidence of unity and brotherly love among fellow Christian Scientists. And to keep the healing thrust of our movement strong, there must be love for their neighbors. If there seems any least lack of such evidence in any church, the individual church member, through his practice of prayer—of knowing the truth —can set about obtaining a clearer conviction of what the true Church is and so help bring it into fresh evidence.
