So You're Thinking of Adoption?

From the February 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science brings to the question of adoption the highest thought—spiritual love. It teaches that God, divine Life, Mind, and Love, is the Father-Mother of all being and that, in reality, all men are the children of the one heavenly Parent, God. As Mrs. Eddy explains, "The real man is not of the dust, nor is he ever created through the flesh; for his father and mother are the one Spirit, and his brethren are all the children of one parent, the eternal good." Retrospection and Introspection, p. 22;

How does this spiritual fact of creation embrace the human situation of adoption? As we identify each person as a child of God, we may first find ourselves with a deeper love for all children. Spiritually clear-eyed, we may see the qualities of joy, energy, purity, and trust expressed by every child, and identify with these qualities because they are ours, too.

We'll find, then, we are able to communicate with children from the heart. The facts of spiritual creation—the only real creation—will eliminate any fear that an adopted child could be unpredictable, unintelligent, or insecure and that we might not be able to relate to him.
