In the dark hours, when evil seems to pile up perplexity and fear around us, we always have a place of security—the rock of God. A particularly dark experience for many of us is not our own sickness but the sickness of a loved one who has faith not in God but in medicine. We wonder, How can I pray for him?
Of course we cannot give a Christian Science treatment to someone without his consent. But we can give ourselves a treatment. A wise Christian Scientist once said, "Unless you see someone as the child of God, it is your problem." Where is the sick person? Why, he exists only in our erroneous thought. God does not love our friend less because, at the moment, he seems to be having faith in another power.
In our mental home—our habitual thought—we can entertain any concept of a person we wish. We can hold in thought a sick mortal we want well, or an idea of God who is always expressing health. Only one of these is real.
