Although I attended the Sunday School, during my teen years I drifted away from the teachings of Christian Science. But I now know that these teachings never really left me. I recall many instances when I used "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Psalms from the Bible for reassurance through trying times.
However, my greatest need came when my three small children had contagious diseases commonly associated with childhood. I wasn't well, and on several occasions had been hospitalized for surgery.
My most frightening experience was after the last operation. My father and sister had died of cancer, and the doctor said he had removed a cancer from my throat. I continued to search for health and peace of mind in an orthodox church for several years, praying that I would be led to someone who could help me and whom I could help. I leaned heavily on God for direction, not realizing at the time that my Christian Science background had everything to do with my turning to God for guidance.
