The Listening Ear

From the June 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Listening for God's guidance spiritualizes one and improves his experience by turning him away from materiality and a finite, limited sense of being. It is prayer, for this listening and hearing is not with the physical ear. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy gives the spiritual meaning of "ears":"Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding."Science and Health, p. 585;

The Bible has much to say about inner listening, followed by obedience, in such words as "hear," "give ear," "hearken unto me." The servant of God heeds Him by expressing His perfect qualities. How encouraging that God, Mind, is glorified in the real, spiritual man, His idea! The thought is uplifting, and spurs one to higher metaphysical effort and closer communion with God in prayer so as to be a truer reflection of Him.

Quietness is necessary for the listening ear to hear and understand God's instructions. One needs humility to be ready to put aside the material senses' stimuli to act impulsively and to satisfy human will. Trusting God creates a calmness by easing fear and anxiety and relaxing tension. In receptive quietness God can be heard giving the right idea. Receiving and following God's messages, the listening ear demonstrates man's unity with God, the oneness that gives inspiration, understanding, joy, and peace.
